Galena Celebrates 200 Years
On December 27, 1826, in a long since forgotten tavern in the Village on Fevre River, people of the town voted - by a margin of a single vote - to name the village "Galena" after the lead ore that made the area prosperous. The post office was established earlier that year, but there was no official name for the town that had been referred to as "La Pointe," "Fredrick's Point," "January's Point," and "Village on Fevre River." This made the postmaster's job confusing, and so a meeting was called and the name "Galena" became the official village title. Galena incorporated as a city in 1835.
To celebrate the 200th birthday, a series of events are being planned to both recognize our bicentennial and focus on the rich history of Galena and the surrounding countryside.
It is our goal to get the people of Galena - and the surrounding communities - to take part in our celebrations, learn our history, and have a sense of pride that we live in such a beautiful and unique area.
